This scheme was a complex mixture of refurbishment, upgrading and the introduction of dementia friendly layouts and finishes. The out patients department has approx 220,000 patients per year, it needed to continue its operational work as no alternative location could be found to decant the services. The Architects and project managers worked with the contractor to devise a series of phases, five in total, to enable the department to carry on business as usual, many phases were carried out after hours.

WB Construction won the tender to carry out the construction work for the refurbishment of the existing Outpatients Department at Darlington Memorial Hospital in August 2013.
The main OPD needed to continue its operational work as no alternative location could be found to decant the services. The architects and project manager devised a series of phases, 5 in total, to enable the department to carry on business as usual. Phases 1 – 4 were carried out after hours.
The OPD is a busy department seeing over 220,000 patients per year and it is a testament to all involved, not one appointment was cancelled. This is due mainly to the excellent site management and programme skills of WB Construction, it is fair to say, Laurence worked extremely hard coordinating a complex contract that was finished on time and on budget.
The standard of finishes and designs have gained many admirers within the service and patient and visitors alike. I am very pleased to be able to commend WB Construction on the user-friendly approach which was seen as excellent communication with all staff groups resulting in an excellent project.
This project consists of a full refurbishment and design of the existing waiting area, this consisted of walls being plaster fixed seating taken out decoration and new floor covering. As you can see the final finish creates a feeling of space and natural light. There was also refurbishment of 4 consultation rooms to bring them to current NHS standards. The surgery was operational throughout the work programme which in total was 3 weeks, the work was delivered on time to a very high standard.

The practice remained fully operational throughout the whole project, so to enable us to achieve the deadline on the contract all the works had to be phased over the 6 week programme, all areas we refurbished to a high standard as per the NHS specification.
